Course Description

  • Residential construction is limited to National Construction Code Class 1 and 10 buildings to a maximum of 3 storeys.
  • Commercial construction is limited to National Construction Code Class 2 to 9 buildings, Type C and B construction.

To achieve this qualification, students must demonstrate competency in 27 units of competency:

  • 24 core units, plus
  • 3 elective units

This will be delivered over 56 weeks including holiday breaks. Students are required to attend a minimum of 20 scheduled course contact hours per week. 

Entry Requirements

Age requirements

Students must be above 18 years of age while filling up the application form.

Pre-Training Review (PTR):

The Pre-Training Review (PTR) will be conducted prior to enrolment in order to confirm that the course selected by the student is appropriate and aligns with Hawk Institute guidance and assessment strategies, as well as the individual’s current skills, learning needs, and future aspirations.

Students are required to complete and submit the PTR Form (included as part of the Application Form) along with their application.

Hawk Institute will review each student’s current competencies, individual needs, English language proficiency, digital literacy, support requirements, and oral communication skills to determine the most appropriate course for the student to achieve their intended outcomes.

The PTR helps to:

  • Identify and arrange any necessary academic, digital, English language, or wellbeing support.
  • Ensure the student’s responses align with their educational and future goals.
  • Determine whether additional support or guidance is necessary.
  • Evaluate whether the student has a sufficient understanding of essential course information to make an informed enrolment decision.

Academic requirements -

To enter this course, delivered at Hawk Institute, applicants should have successfully completed year 12 or senior secondary studies in the applicant’s home country equivalent to Australian senior secondary school examination.

OR

Mature age students will also be considered without the minimum education requirements considering they have relevant work experience within the chosen area of study and a demonstrated capacity to meet the course requirements. A minimum of 2 years’ experience would normally be expected; however, each case will be reviewed individually with relevant work experience evidence in the form of an employment reference letter on company letterhead, work samples and curriculum vitae submitted will be considered. Such learners will be accessed for possible RPL opportunities, and their course duration and volume of learning will be adjusted accordingly if any RPL is granted.

English Language Requirements for International students:

International students applying for this course either off-shore or on-shore will require either a minimum IELTS test score of 6.0 or equivalent with a minimum of 5 in each of the four test components for direct entry into a VET course;

or, IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent with an ELICOS course (up to 10 weeks) to be taken before the course;

or, IELTS score of 5.0 or equivalent with an ELICOS course (up to 20 weeks) to be taken before the course;

(Note: Results older than two years are not acceptable)

or, Oxford Placement test with score 61 or higher.

Score Guide: Average test score of 61 or higher in Oxford placement test is equivalent to IELTS 6.0.

Language, Literacy and Digital Numeracy test (LLND):

Students undertaking this course at Hawk Institute must possess sound Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital skills. To determine this, all students wanting to study at Hawk Institute are required to undertake LLND test prior to the enrolment of the course. The LLND assessment is conducted using the LLN Robot, an ACSF-aligned digital assessment tool.

Students will be required to undertake language, literacy and numeracy and Digital Skills (LLND) test and achieve expected performance level of ACSF level 4 for CPC50220- Diploma of Building and Construction (Building). Based on the test outcome, where support needs are identified students will be offered appropriate ACSF support plan or referred to external support services as part of our commitment to student wellbeing and success. Refer to Hawk Institute’s Enrolment Kit and/or students Handbook for detailed information.

Computer literacy requirements -

All students enrolling into this course must have basic computer skills. Students will be required to fill in the questions related to computer and internet skills in the Pre-Training Review form attached along with the application form.

Students who do not possess basic computing skills will be provided with basic computer use support. Students may contact Hawk Institute for any further information or assistance at 1300 159 461.

Materials and Equipment Required

Institute will provide access to computers with required resources including access to internet during classroom hours, however, to work on the assignments and tasks for self-study, all learners are expected to have access to a laptop or computer with the Windows 7 operating system or higher.

Students must have an active email address for communication and be contactable by phone (mobile or landline) and by mail (postal address). All learners are expected to have access to MS office application such as Microsoft Word, an email platform.

Learners will be required to have a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kit for Painting and Decorating. This includes safety shoes (Steel toe), Protectives glasses, a safety vest (Neon/ Glowing), Protective gloves, earmuffs and a working uniform mask and a hard hat. This PPE kit will be required to enter the workshop and to be able to undertake training effectively. Learners can avail the PPE kit from the institute for $400 or from suppliers outside. However, if learners wish to buy PPE kit from outside, learners must ensure that the PPE kit meets WHS requirements.

Physical Abilities Requirements -

Physical Abilities requirements Learners are expected to have physical abilities and manual handling required to perform tasks involved while undergoing training effectively. As part of this qualification, students are expected to do manual handling as it is a physically demanding occupation.

Assessment Methods

All assessments of units of competency will be conducted according to the assessment guidelines and competency standards of the official Training Package for this qualification. Students will be required to perform in a range of areas including practical demonstrations in practical training workshop, projects, and knowledge tests, Case Study/Reports, Project, Role Plays.

After successfully achieving this qualification, candidates may CPC60220 - Advanced Diploma of Building and Construction (Management) at other institutes as Hawk Institute doesn’t offer this qualification.
